Here are traces of human existence in Aljezur
dating from pre-historic times. It is though predominantly the roman
and Arabic presence (altogether having inhabited the area for six
centuries) that have strongly marked the city with a good example
being the castle built by the Arabs during the X century. In the
XIII century the Christians reconquered the city.
The 1755 earthquake that devastated the Algarve coast destroyed
or partially damaged many of the most important buildings namely
its churches. They have since been rebuilt out of which we must
point out the Igreja da Misericórdia and the Igreja Matriz
